Thanks, Q100 Atlanta, for making this available.

  1. We're as ticked off and frustrated as anybody else. However, what can we do that will, a) really get Washington's attention and, b) stand any chance of changing their behavior? Personally, we don't think Obama will be swayed by poorly covered "public opinion".
Based on relatively small, local protests of Gore vs Bush in 2000 in front of CNN in Atlanta that were not widely covered by tv media, what impact did we have on the election outcome? I don't know that we had any real impact. It felt good to have an outlet and to be doing something, but to what effect?

Now, can we think massive? Can we think about hitting them where it hurts?
I run a business and simply cannot take time off to march on D.C. without prior planning. But, with planning, I would be willing to shut down for several days, deny the politicians money from transactions for that period, and take a bus to D.C. to march on the White House and Congress. With a backpack, tent and food, I'm good for a week.
If as many small businesses as possible could plan for a week-long shut down, and if we could get 1+ million of us in one place for more than 1 day, what would you estimate the impact and media coverage to be? The political impact might amount to nil, but it would sure turn some heads.

  2. Hi Cameron,

Thanks very much for the note. The reason there's been so little warning for people like you is that this all starting rolling around Thursday/Friday of last week.

I decided I'd had enough at about the same time as a bunch of other people. Given the media cycle, we really need to strike while the iron's hot: get the protest out there while people are still unhappy, so our elected elites can see what an unhappy, motivated populace looks like.

There will be more time to plan other protests, believe me.

  3. I have an IDEA! Every working person can legally claim enought dependants on their W4 to not have any Taxes deducted from their paycheck. "BUT", be sure at the end of every quarter you pay estimated taxes you did not have deducted. This will send a message that the Government will hear loud and clear. The news media cannot ignore it either.

  4. Hi Tim,

Thanks for the note. My first thought is this would be a bit more hassle than the ordinary person wants to handle. Though, when taxes get high enough, people will start to do this.
